Bamboo Flooring FAQ

Bamboo flooring is more affordable than traditional hardwoods. It can be installed on various types of sub-floors such as cement, wood, tiles, and plywood. Bamboo flooring is easy to maintain and clean. It is ideal for allergy sufferers as it does not promote dust. Because bamboo is a giant grass it is retardant to termites: termites eat wood.

Bamboo flooring is a versatile product and can be installed in most rooms. It is not recommended for wet areas such as bathrooms and laundries. Extended exposure to water may cause the flooring to warp.

Kingswell flooring recommends you sweep or vacuum your bamboo floor or use a damp mop to remove dirt and grit. Do not clean with soap, oil, wax, acid ammonia or any other caustic solvents or abrasive cleaners. Use mats in doorways to collect dirt and sand, and place pads under chair legs and furniture. Ensure any spills are cleaned up immediately.

Solid strand-woven is the hardest bamboo on the market. But traditional solid bamboo floors with horizontal and vertical structures are cheaper compared to strand-woven bamboo floors. Solid strand-woven bamboo is compressed, which means it is much harder than traditional horizontal and vertical structure solid bamboo. Average Janka hardness is 14-15 for strand-woven bamboo, and 8-9 for solid horizontal or vertical bamboo.

On recent years, 90% of the bamboo floors on the market are strand-woven bamboo, which is more durable and popular.

There are some cheaper bamboo floors with 10mm or 12mm thickness on the market. However, 14mm thick boards have a more solid feeling after installation. The floor can also be sanded a few times in the future. It is impossible to sand 10mm thick bamboo.

Most houses in Australia are bigger than those in other countries. Wider boards have fewer joints and look more beautiful in big open spaces. It is not easy to balance the bamboo width and structure reliability. Wider boards always need better technology to manufacture. We supply quality 135mm width bamboo floors, made from one whole bamboo solid 150mm block without any adhesive joints. There are a few other width bamboo flooring products on the Australian market, like 115mm, 122mm, 125mm, and 130mm. If the bamboo flooring width is more than 150mm wide, most will have structural adhesive joints between two pieces of boards. We only supply bamboo flooring made from one whole block without any joints.

All the bamboo flooring on the Australian market is manufactured and imported from China. Bamboo flooring is an adaptation of proven European timber flooring technology, but instead of using wood we substitute bamboo. In fact much of the machinery, polyurethane and glues our manufactures use are still imported from European countries. But China still has the most abundant supply of suitable bamboo.

Some clients tell us of bamboo flooring brands that are imported from Malaysia. However, unlike China, Malaysia has no sustainable Moso bamboo forests. The original bamboo blocks must still be imported from China. We have never heard of any bamboo flooring that is made in Australia.

Most strand-woven bamboo on the market has no hot melt extra surface protection. The bamboo floors with hot melt technology will last much longer. Our manufacturer’s high-level research and development engineers are working harder to keep making bamboo floors better and stronger.

It really depends on the severity of the flooding – the volume of water spilt on the floor and how long it remains there before it dries or is drained away. In minor flooding scenarios, there is often no change to the floor’s appearance. However, instances of major flooding can result in the floor having to be repaired by replacing boards in the damaged areas or by sanding and polishing.

A good bamboo showroom can tell you everything about the product. An Australian locally-based business can be very important if you need to make any after sale warranty or quality claims. Every year, we have some customers who bought cheap poor quality bamboo from other sellers who have now closed down or cannot be contacted. Internet shopping may be cheaper, but sometimes it does have high risks compared with traditional flooring shops. An average order of bamboo flooring can cost thousands of dollars. We always recommend all customers visit the bamboo showroom before making a decision.

All our bamboo floors are made from Moso Bamboo (Also called “Mao Zhu” or “Giant Bamboo”). Lovely pandas never eat Moso Bamboo. So we do not have to worry that pandas will run out of bamboo to eat. Strand-woven bamboo flooring has become very popular as a green building product. Now we find more and more new building projects are choosing bamboo flooring. Kingswell Bamboo is proud to supply and be involved in several Australian green building projects. We encourage more and more people to choose bamboo, rather than timber flooring, as bamboo is the most sustainable resource.

Strand-woven bamboo flooring is a very new, green flooring product. It only entered the Australia market in 2005. It is a new bamboo technology. There was previously no strand-woven bamboo flooring on sale in Australia. Traditional horizontal and vertical bamboo flooring has been in Australia about 15-20 years. But they are not as popular as today’s strand-woven bamboo flooring because solid horizontal and vertical bamboo is uncompressed and not as durable as strand-woven compressed bamboo. Horizontal and vertical bamboo are very similar to hardwood floors. They are still a green flooring choice, but you will see more dents on their surfaces after 3 or 4 years’ use.

Bamboo flooring sold by Kingswell flooring comes with a 25-year limited manufacturer’s structure warranty for residential applications.
